In ancient Rome, Thermae (from Greek thermos, "hot") and balnea (Greek βαλανε?ον, balaneion) were facilities for bathing. Thermae usually refers to the large imperial bath complexes, while balneae were smaller-scale facilities, public or private, that existed in great numbers throughout Rome.
